Advanced Research Tip: Sapphic Histories
When searching for historical context it is important to make sure you know the types of words that the identity has been known by and might be included in documentation, and texts. Many databases including the Wyndham Robinson Library's are easily navigable if you know the right subjects to type in. Some terms that can be useful when attempting to research Sapphic Women are things such as: Homosexuality, Sexual Orientation, Sapphic, Lesbian, Sapphic Women, Women, Lesbian Women, along with Homosexual Women. It is helpful to look at a variety of authors who have discussed the topics of historical women, and historical queer identities outside of just what is listed here. It is important to expand your research and make sure to find a variety of authors who can speak on the subject.
Another, slightly more modern, place to look when looking at Sapphic Histories is things like film. Although often limited by restrictions of the period in which they were released they can provide insight into how Sapphic identities were handled in the public eye. Included below is a list of several historical sapphic films.
