Sapphic Women before the 21st Century

Introduction

Sapphic stories, and accounts are often discredited or quietly hidden away from the public eye. With both women’s and LGBTQ+ histories being targeted by many, it can be hard to remember that the history of these women is an old one. It doesn’t mean that these stories are not documented though. Nor does it mean that it is impossible to conduct research on sapphic histories. There are many books throughout the past and present about women before the 21st century who either are assumed to be sapphic, or self identified with sapphic identities.

When talking about sapphic histories many people tend to focus on the modern, however the stories of women loving women before the modern day are still just as important and provide a rich cultural context. These books, articles, and periodicals provide the stories of these women who were living and loving one another before the 21st century.

While the current day and age may be a more comfortable time for those who identify under the sapphic umbrella, stories like these are important to understanding the cultural weight and how we got to where we are today. In a time of heavy political turmoil worldwide that threatens the livelihood for marginalized groups, it is especially important we remember our histories and the women who shaped them.
