Subject-specific advice for advanced search

Advanced Research Tip: Key Words

There are specific key words that are incredibly helpful when attempting to find specific information in the sphere of classics. The labeling of a period as "ancient" is more broadly referential than something being from the "classical" period of any one place. The "Roman Empire" is far more expansive than just "Rome," and changed size frequently over the roughly 800 years it existed. Narrowing down where and when to research is an important part of making research manageable.

Time Period: Ancient [Greek, Rome, etc.], Classical, Hellenistic, Kingdom, Republic, Empire, Antiquity, Mycenaean, Archaic

Locations and People: Greece, Grecian, Graecian, Greek; Rome, Roman, Latin; Thracians, Thrace; Amazonians, Amazons; Mediterranean

Topics: Art, Archaeology, Mythology, Myth, Society

An additional research tip, especially if researching a particularly niche topic, is that good sources very frequently lead to other good sources. If a source has been cited by other published work, it will often have a "Cited" link that can lead researchers to other authors to investigate, other publications, and different bodies of work in general. Looking at the works that a good source cites can also open many doors for finding alternative perspectives and additional research.
