Tips for Finding Books

While searching for your artist's name in OneSearch, you can specify the type of book you wish to find by adding the following words:

  • Exhibitions OR museum OR gallery - this finds the catalogs of artists' exhibitions, published by the museum or art gallery where the art was shown. Exhibition catalogs contain collections of images, and essays about an artist's work.
  • Catalogs - some catalogs are also created by art book publishers. These also contain collections of images, and essays about an artist's work.
  • Biography - this finds books describing an artist's life and career.
  • Criticism - this finds books with analysis of an artist's work.

Check the creation/publishing date

Older art books (pre-1990) can still have very useful text; but the images may be of lesser quality and/or in black & white.

How do I know if a book has illustrations?

Look  in the "Details" section for:

"Phys. Desc. 1 v. (unpaged) : ill. (some col.), ports. ; 27 cm"

ill. = illustrations.        col. = color.

Google Books contains full text for books in the public domain (pre-1923); partial text for books under copyright.

Very useful for finding out which books contain information on your topic; then you can order them via inter-library loan if Hollins doesn't have them.
