All About Thesis Writing at HU

This guide is designed to help you tackle your senior thesis, I encourage you to refer to it often as you work on your paper.

I also encourage you to contact me with any questions you may have, whether it's about finding the right source or citing the source properly. My contact information is on the right (lvilelle@hollins.edu; 362-6232), and I hope I can be a valuable resource for you this semester.

Important for Thesis Writers!

Use Interlibrary Loan (ILL)

  • This is how you’ll obtain those books and articles that we do not provide access to (or if a book you need is currently checked out, you may use ILL). Or you may find a microfilm collection of primary sources that you would like to use. Or a dissertation… or…  (the possibilities are endless).
  • Book requests (or anything that must be shipped here): allow 1-3 weeks.
  • Article requests (or anything that can be sent via e-mail): allow 2-4 business days.

Virginia Tech's Newman Library: a 50-minute drive away

  • As a Hollins student, you have checkout privileges at Virginia Tech. You may obtain a guest borrower’s card by showing your Hollins ID at the circulation desk in Newman Library. Guest borrowing privileges allow you to check out an item for 30 days, renewable up to 4 times.
  • When in the Virginia Tech library, you have immediate access to more online resources (ebooks, journal articles, etc.) than we have. You should save/download items while there to bring back with you.
  • If you'd like tips on making the most of a trip to Virginia Tech, please talk to me.

Submitting an honors thesis to the university archive

If you are writing an honors thesis, you will submit it to the University Archives, either in print or via the Hollins Digital Commons.

Your thesis advisor may have guidelines that are specific to your department or discipline. If there are not any department-specific guidelines, please follow the link below for guidelines to use in preparing your thesis.
