BTS GLAM 210 Subject Guide by Ari Carter and Sterling Cullinane(2025)

Introduction

This guide is meant to lead researchers through their work on sword duels in historic Europe- an extensive subject, which will be broken down with helpful resources. Sword duels became widespread in Europe among the gentry after being considered a low act committed by peasants. Once the gentry adopted this practice, sword dueling became a matter of honor- around the 17th century. The use of firearms for duels was introduced as well- but swords were the primary weapon for duels before firearms became more reliable. Most sword duels were fought over honor, and sometimes involved a lady’s honor, or insults regarding someone’s credibility or trustworthiness. Duels were expected to be conducted under certain conditions- and gentlemanly behavior was vital for the participants to preserve their reputations. Duels were often illegal, and so they took place in the early morning or late evening in secluded areas- even when swords were still the weapon of choice. The dueling party would select “seconds,” who would be in charge of attempting to resolve the dispute, finding doctors, and scheduling the duel. Duels were the persevering societal practice due to lax attitudes on the subject. Duels were considered the best way to resolve intense disputes, even when they were prohibited by law. Duels only fell out of favor when opposition to them became more widespread.
