Web Sites

The Poetry Foundation

The Poetry Foundation, formerly known as the Modern Poetry Association, developed as a way to support the publication of Poetry Magazine. Their mission is "to amplify poetry and celebrate poets by fostering spaces for all to create, experience, and share poetry." They provide grants, fellowships, and awards to poets across the United States. In addition to supporting current poets, they also have open submissions to Poetry Magazine for anyone who is interested in publishing their work. Alongside being a wonderful resource for poets, the Poetry Foundation also provides open access to their Digital Archive, where you can access works by past and current poets, including William Shakespeare, Emily Dickinson, and Natasha Trethewey.

Palette Poetry

Palette Poetry is a literary journal committed to amplifying the voices of experienced and developing poets, focusing on writers from marginalized groups. Palette publishes poems, conducts interviews with featured poets, and publishes craft essays from experienced poets. These are a great resource for writers and teachers of poetry. While Palette is primarily focused on helping poets improve their craft and build a published portfolio, they also provide opportunities for those interested in editorial work. There is an open call for readers once a year that comes with an opportunity to grow into a guest editor position. This website is great if you are interested in dipping your toe into the submission pool, wanting to gain editing experience, or just looking to read some good poetry.

Writers.com

Writers.com was founded in the early 1990s as a website created by and for writers in the digital age. Their primary focus is providing educational opportunities for writers at any stage and genre. Writer.com offers easily accessible online courses taught by experienced authors in various subject areas, including poetry. Their goal is to continue building an international community of writers dedicated to expanding their craft. There is a registration fee for each course, however, they also publish craft essays across different genres and have a weekly newsletter that is free to the public and perfect for supporting independent research.
