IOER Program

"eliminate hidden costs and barriers to participation in the full range of learning experiences" - Create a team for the AAC&U-IOER at President and Provost request

Background

We would like to develop a formal or step-by-step process for students who cannot afford course material costs. This process or checklist would be included in every syllabus. Steps may include

  • Checking the free store inventory (Maryke and James are investigating this as a possibility)
  • Checking the library reserves (James may purchase 1-2 expensive required textbooks from his science book funds)
  • Directing students to the student handbook section explaining emergency funds (p. 36)

We would include this in syllabi to normalize help-seeking for students who cannot acquire or afford a textbook.

How fo faculty deal with students who cannot afford course materials costs?

Sciences: Some texts are available in the bubbles (small libraries in Dana)
