Frequently Asked Questions

How can I send my students a link for a film?

Look for the word Share. In Films on Demand and Kanopy it is below the video; in Theatre on Video it is at the top of your screen.

How can I embed a film in Moodle?

The "Share" feature also provides you with an embed code, to copy and paste it into Moodle.

It is not recommended to embed videos directly into your main Moodle page, as it can make the page slow to load. Instead, use the following directions (here is a video version)

  • Click on "Add an Activity or Resource."
  • Scroll down to Resources, then click "Page," "Add."
  • In General, add a name (required) and description (optional).
  • In Content click the first button, with the arrow pointing down. This opens more buttons. Click on the button for HTML, which displays these symbols: </>
  • Paste the embed code into this box. Click "save and display" to see the video appear.
  • When you click "Save and return to course" your students will see a simple link. Clicking this link will open a separate page in which they can watch the video.

The film isn't working. What can I do?

Free/Reduced Price Streaming Films Offered During COVID-19

VideoLib's Master List : Free and reduced price offers.

As of 3/19, this list shows details on free or reduced price offers from the publishers/distributors listed below. Rather than duplicate work and risk our guide being outdated, we recommend your using the VideoLib list.

For Faculty: many educational video publishers and distributors - for example, Women Make Movies, are offering free digital access to films if libraries already own a licensed copy of a film on DVD or Blu-Ray.

  • If there is a film you are used to showing your students via DVD or Blu-Ray, ask your liaison librarian to work with the publisher to get digital access.
  • If you would like new films to use, we may be able to obtain digital access for other items from our physical collection. Ask your liaison librarian for more information.

To help address the increased need for streaming films, we have established a temporary account with Swank Digital Campus. Our access is LIMITED -- the account only allows access to 25 films. If you see a film on this platform (note that the platform emphasizes Hollywood films) that you would like to incorporate into your online course in the coming weeks, please ask your liaison librarian as soon as possible. We are providing these slots on a first-come, first-serve basis.
